Ikea Hack | Platsa Dressing Table
Sometimes you have to adapt ideas…and in my case this dressing table came out of me making a big mistake. I’m so happy I messed up!
If you’ve read my post about our bedroom storage problem (if not, it’s right here) you will have seen that I incorrectly measured the space I had and therefore bought one too many units. I was only out by 5cm, but it resulted in not being able to fit one of the drawer units. Rather than change the plan too much, we adapted it to incorporate a dressing table area into the storage unit.
IKEA HACK
We bought an additional tall wardrobe door from the same Platsa range which my dad cut to size and created a border with some coving. He also created a ‘leg’ with a piece of the door and fixed one of the Platsa drawer units to the now tabletop, creating a second leg. He’s probably a genius, but I could be biased!
Once fitted together, the unit slotted perfectly in place. Currently, our TV unit sits on the surface, but money no object, I would mount a TV on the wall that when off would act as a mirror. Have you seen this type of TV before? So nice, but so expensive. The reality is I need to combine the TV and a mirror into this space and would appreciate any ideas on that as I’m currently leaning a mirror in front of the TV. I have to move the mirror, any time was want to watch TV upstairs, although this isn’t too much of a problem.
SEATING
Once I had used the dressing table for a while with a Ghost chair I took out of our study, I realised that I wanted a storage stool that could be tucked out of the way. Although the Ghost chair looked lovely, it stuck out, narrowing the floor space at the end of our bed. I also thought some extra storage for my hairdryer etc would come in handy.
I searched high and low, finally finding this dark grey velvet stool, with storage and a gold base to match the other metal work, from TKMaxx. It’s perfect as it slots right under the desk and fits pretty much all of my hair stylers (when they are cold!).
ACCESSORIES
One of my most-visited shops on the high street is H&M Home. I love all of their soft furnishings and recently they have been producing stunning decorative items too. My most recent purchase was these gorgeous gold trays for our bedside tables and a small one to compliment the dressing table. It’s perfect for holding perfumes, lotions and potions and even a rogue earring or two!
Hopefully this was inspiring you to create a dressing table or to adapt your ideas if you make a mistake. It could turn into something more wonderful than your first thought! Let me know if your plans have had to change because of a mistake and what you ended up doing?
